Is humiliation a form of trauma?
The author identifies acts of humiliation as a specific and often traumatic way of exercising power, with a set of consistently occurring elements and predictable consequences, including a loss of the ability to trust others. It is argued that these consequences are serious and long-lasting.
It is an emotion felt by a person whose social status, either by force or willingly, has just decreased. It can be brought about through intimidation, physical or mental mistreatment or trickery, or by embarrassment if a person is revealed to have committed a socially or legally unacceptable act.
You feel humiliated when someone deliberately does something that makes you feel inferior or look bad in the eyes of others. For example, when someone physically bullies you, when someone publicly makes a belittling remark about you, or when someone spreads bad rumors behind your back.
Overwhelming feelings of anger, guilt, anxiety or fear. Heightened startle response. Dreams or nightmares about it. Lowered self-esteem.
According to Gerald Fishkin, a California-based psychologist and author of The Science of Shame, the experience of shame is connected with the limbic system. That's the part of the brain that influences the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for the fight-or-flight response.
The researchers found that the feeling of humiliation caused much faster and more intense brain activity than joy. It was more negative than anger, and areas linked to pain were activated. Although compliments aroused joy, the feeling of humiliation was much more intense than that pleasant emotion.
Psychological or emotional abuse
It can involve both verbal and non-verbal abuse which can scare, humiliate and isolate a person. This may include: threats. humiliation or ridicule.
In line with this, some recent empirical evidence on the neural processing of emotions has showed that humiliation is a very intense emotion, more so than related negative emotions such as shame and anger (Otten and Jonas, 2014).
We feel shame when we violate the social norms we believe in. At such moments we feel humiliated, exposed and small and are unable to look another person straight in the eye. We want to sink into the ground and disappear. Shame makes us direct our focus inward and view our entire self in a negative light.
Jesus said that everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 14:11). Christ's humiliation takes the sting of the curse from every stage of our lives, including our deaths. There is something glorious in every aspect of Christ's humiliation as well.
What does trauma dissociation look like?
Signs and symptoms that you are dissociating include: feeling disconnected from your body, like an “out-of-body experience” feeling separate from the world around you. feeling numb or experiencing emotional detachment.
Initial reactions to trauma can include exhaustion, confusion, sadness, anxiety, agitation, numbness, dissociation, confusion, physical arousal, and blunted affect.

What are the hardest emotions to control?

Emotional Trauma Symptoms

What is fawning? Fawning is a trauma response where a person develops people-pleasing behaviors to avoid conflict and to establish a sense of safety. In other words, the fawn trauma response is a type of coping mechanism that survivors of complex trauma adopt to "appease" their abusers.
Childhood trauma in adults also results in feeling disconnected, and being unable to relate to others. Studies have shown that adults that experience childhood trauma were more likely to struggle with controlling emotions, and had heightened anxiety, depression, and anger.

The freeze, flop, friend, fight or flight reactions are immediate, automatic and instinctive responses to fear. Understanding them a little might help you make sense of your experiences and feelings.
What area of the brain is most active in a traumatic event?
The amygdala is the emotional response center of the brain that helps people perceive and control their emotions. It also plays a role in emotional memories and fear response. When someone experiences a traumatic event and is showing signs of PTSD, their amygdala often becomes more active than it normally would.
